If you want a replacement tooth that looks and feels like you’re not missing one, consider a dental implant. Once the implant is firmly set in your mouth, we will attach the replacement tooth. This solution is often a better option than a bridge, as it does not stress the surrounding teeth for support.
When you’re missing one or more natural teeth, your jaw can shrink to compensate from the missing space. This can cause all of your other teeth in the area to shift. A shrinking jaw gives the appearance of premature aging and can cause general pain and discomfort. That pain and discomfort can increase while eating, drinking, and talking. Getting dental implants will slow down and can even reverse the that shrinking appearance and process.
Dental implants fake teeth that act and look like the structure of a natural tooth. They are thin biocompatible titanium posts that are suitable for your body. Unlike other dental restorations that can shift or fall out due to the receding jawline, dental implants fuse to your jaw bone in a reliable and effective dental surgical treatment.
A dental implant is a standalone unit, so we don’t have to put extra stress on neighboring teeth by attaching crowns to adjacent teeth. Dental implants allow you to speak, eat, and drink with a complete, healthy smile. Our patients are always amazed at how natural their dental implants look and feel once they’re placed.
Implants are versatile. If you are only missing one tooth, one implant plus one replacement tooth will do the trick. If you are missing several teeth in a row, a few strategically placed implants can support a permanent bridge (a set of replacement teeth). Similarly, if you have lost all of your teeth, a full bridge or full denture can be permanently fixed in your mouth with a strategic number of implants.
Conventional bridges and dentures are not fixed to the bone, and can therefore be unstable. This can make it difficult to eat or smile with confidence. Implants not only look more natural, but also feel and act more like normal teeth, with a stronger biting force. And because they don’t directly rely on neighboring teeth for support, implants don’t compromise the health of your natural teeth. In fact, bridges are only expected to last seven to ten years, even less with root canals, whereas implants will typically last a lifetime.
Consider your replacement teeth to be the same as natural teeth. They require the same daily brushing and flossing, and the same amount of regular checkups. Just like your natural teeth, the better you take care of your replacements, the longer they will last. Implant Services
Typically the implant process begins with a consultation with Dr. Toups. He will examine your mouth and jawbone to determine if the procedure is right for you. Before we begin the procedure, your gums need to be completely healthy, and your jawbone needs to be strong. If we identify any cavities or issues with your oral health, we will need to treat it prior to the dental implant procedure.
Once you are cleared for the procedure, we will take an impression of your mouth to create a new tooth in a dental lab. Each synthetic tooth will match the size and shape of the surrounding teeth, along with having a perfect color match. This way your smile will appear completely natural once we complete the procedure.
It is important to know that not everyone is a good candidate for dental implants. If Dr. Toups doesn’t believe you are a good candidate for implants, he will make a recommendation that is best for you.
